Ultimately, you’re not asking about gratitude. You’re asking whether you can keep one comforting delusion while dismantling the rest.
Gratitude is often used as a psychological sedative to patch holes in the narrative. Be grateful, so you don’t question.Be grateful, so you tolerate the intolerable, etc. It’s frequently prescribed as a cure for existential discomfort, which undermines dismantling. If gratitude keeps you from seeing what’s true, it’s just another blanket you pull over your eyes.
Gratitude is one of the most common sacred cows we try to cling to, an unquestioned good, a beloved emotional security blanket the false self hopes will be exempt from dismantling. This may be hard to hear, but gratitude, like meaning, purpose, love, morality, is part of the dream’s emotional arsenal. It’s not wrong, it’s not bad, and it’s not forbidden. But it’s not a path, and it plays no role in reaching existential maturity. The false self just wants it to.
This is typical Phase One / early Phase Two energy. You’ve started questioning the dream, but you still want to keep your favorite parts of it intact. It’s the mind looking for a “safe” spiritual angle, a way to approach awakening that doesn’t threaten identity. Gratitude becomes a tool of avoidance - something to soothe yourself with instead of burning through illusion.
Put simply: Gratitude doesn’t help you grow up, but when you grow up, the fake gratitude dies and the real thing appears. When you’re not arguing with life, what remains feels a lot like gratitude, but without the drama. Ultimately, gratitude isn’t something you feel; it’s the space that opens up when you stop resisting what is.
The real movement isn’t toward gratitude; it’s toward truth. And truth doesn’t require emotional accompaniment.
So the question isn’t “What role does gratitude play?” It’s: What do I fear will happen if I stop using gratitude to stabilize myself?
That’s the edge where honesty starts.
